“It’s a miracle. It is,” his daughter, Susan Regensburger, said, per Boston’s WFXT.
Regensburger said that despite the family being told to make funeral arrangements, MacKay recovered, and is now in good spirits, with family, friends and National Guard members throwing a ceremony for the veteran’s 100th birthday, later serenading him by singing “Happy Birthday.”
MacKay also celebrated his birthday on May 15 by video chatting with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, saying he feels wonderful turning 100, with the secret to making it to that age being “to live a good life and be happy.”
Regensburger told the WFXT that MacKay didn’t complain much at all amid the outbreak, despite it claiming nearly a third of all residents, and the centennial still residing at the COVID-19 wing, with his only desire being to be with his family.
