California Governor Gavin Newsom placed a new overnight curfew due to a surge in coronavirus cases. The restriction was announced a few days after the governor decided to pull the emergency brakes on the state’s reopening.
Non-Essential Activities Banned From 10 PM to 5 AM.
The order issued by The California Department of Public Health bans non-essential outdoor activities from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for counties with the highest number of COVID-19 cases. The curfew will be effective from Saturday till December 21, unless extended.
As the daily coronavirus cases in California exceeded 10,000, nearly 94% of the state residents living in the purple tier counties had to suspend or restrict their business since the beginning of the pandemic.
Public health officer Dr. Erica Pan asked people in California “to change their personal behaviors to stop the surge” and to stay “physically distanced during this critical time.”
The new overnight curfew resembles the lockdown order issued in the City of Los Angeles to stop the COVID-19 surge. The LA lockdown involved closing non-essential in-person services from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Residents of California affected by the latest virus restrictions will be allowed to pick up restaurant orders, visit healthcare providers, and buy life essentials.
