California Set to Ban the Sale of New Diesel and Gas Cars by 2035

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to support the most aggressive clean-car policy in the US. The order will ban the sale of gasoline vehicles by 2035 to reduce gas emissions and encourage the switch to electric cars.

The Radical Order Receives Mixed Reception

Gov. Newsom stated that "This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change" and  "Our cars shouldn't make wildfires worse — and create more days filled with smoky air."

Newsom is a Democrat who supported a ban on petroleum fracking but called on the California Legislature to change that. According to Newsom, with the wildfires still burning in California, fighting climate change is an emergency, however, the state's efforts have failed since the Trump administration landed in court.

A spokesman for the Institute for Energy Research called Newsom’s order  "another silly distraction from real problems", and the senior economist David Kreutzer said that cars don’t cause forest fires and "If people want to drive electric cars, they'll buy them."
