Ed Brodow: Democrats Are Intent on Destroying America

My latest book, Tyranny of the Minority: How the Left is Destroying America, argues that the Democratic Party has rejected the values responsible for the success of our nation. Here are just a few traditional values the Dems would like to trash: freedom of speech; the primacy of individual rights over unlimited governmental power; due process and the rule of law; equality of opportunity via free market competition; the right to own property and determine how that property will be used; acceptance of personal responsibility. The Democratic Party insists that our cherished values are obsolete. Entertain no illusions—the election between Trump and a Democrat in 2020 will determine if the nation as we know it is to survive.

Efforts to destroy American values reached a crescendo with Barack Obama’s campaign to “transform” the nation. The people who voted for his “hope and change” platform believed he would make our lives better. They were misled. Obama is guilty of the worst offense of any president: he lied to us. Obama hates America. From the outset, his intention was to destroy our country. Reflecting his contempt for the Constitution, Obama’s government tried to insinuate itself into every aspect of our lives. This was not the kind of limited government envisioned by the Founding Fathers. It was closer to the dystopian vision of George Orwell’s novel, 1984. Obama’s version of big government eventually would lead to oppressive control over the individual and the destruction of our standard of living.

“The socialist Left,” wrote Steve Baldwin in Western Journalism, “believed the Obama era was the best opportunity ever to transform America to a socialist-based economy, and to eradicate our commitment to a Constitution designed to limit federal power.” Instead, something wonderful happened. The American people repudiated Obama’s anti-American agenda by electing Donald Trump. “Obama’s legacy is in utter ruins,” says Matt Margolis in Trumping Obama. “His executive pen was really a pencil and Trump was the eraser. The Obama era—once seen as transformative and consequential—will now be a mere footnote in history.” Andrew Sullivan concurs, writing in New York Magazine that Trump “has effectively erased Barack Obama’s two-term legacy.”

Trump is the most successful president of my lifetime. In his first two years, he revived the economy, cut taxes, slashed unemployment, pulled us out of the Paris Accord, stood up to Chinese economic deceit, defended the border, eliminated the Obamacare penalty, rolled back hundreds of onerous Obama regulations, and placed two conservatives on the Supreme Court.

Despite his achievements, the news is full of attempts to cast Trump as a divisive racist who is unfit to sit in the Oval Office. No president has ever been handicapped by equivalent “resistance” from the Deep State—unelected, unaccountable government employees who are loyal to the Democratic Party. Thanks to their influence, the public was forced to endure two years of the Mueller investigation into alleged Trump/Russia collusion. In the end, we found out that the allegations against Trump were completely false and that the investigation was nothing more than an attempt to invalidate a bona fide presidential election.

Undaunted by their failure to unseat Trump with the special counsel, the Democrats continue to bombard us with lies and falsehoods. The latest manifestation is the felonious attempt to impeach Trump led by Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff. When asked what crime Trump has committed that would justify impeachment, the Democrats have no response. Pelosi has refused to conduct a vote on impeachment in the House as required by the Constitution and Schiff insists on holding hearings in secret. In other words, Democrats are making up their own rules in a manner reminiscent of a third-world dictatorship. Instead of defending the president, the Republicans are out to lunch. Fortunately, Trump is quite capable of defending himself.

As we approach the 2020 election, the Democratic Party has been taken over by the lunatic far Left: Schiff, Warren, Sanders, Harris, Nadler, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and company. The party’s presidential line-up makes Obama look like a conservative. Their platform is the endorsement of socialism, generous giveaways, unfettered immigration, and contempt for the rule of law. Who will pay for all of it? The Democrats have no idea nor do they appear to care. All they care about is preventing Trump from doing his job.

How are they getting away with this? Why are the Democrats allowed to divide the country with their unfounded attacks on the president? Why do otherwise intelligent people tolerate the racist, sexist notion that women and minorities are oppressed by evil white males? When will the justice system do its job by going after the real culprits—Hillary Clinton, James Comey, Susan Rice, Eric Holder, and others from the Obama Administration who demonstrated total disdain for the Constitution and the rule of law? When will the mainstream media revert to telling the truth?

The Democrats and their surrogates—the media, academia, Hollywood—are committed to a winner-take-all battle for the future of America. Prior to Trump, conservatives were unwilling to say out loud that leftist policies are treacherous. The most significant thing Trump represents is a push-back by the Right against the destructive ideology of the Left. There is a danger in remaining silent while a cadre of harebrained Democratic liberals transform America into an authoritarian socialist nation run by unaccountable bureaucrats.

Can we remain faithful to American values? Do we have the fortitude to defend the Constitution? Perhaps Aldous Huxley was correct when he predicted that, as our liberties are being taken away from us, we will be brainwashed to enjoy our servitude by a combination of propaganda and recreational drugs.
