Consumers will be seeing a shortage of Clorox’s disinfecting wipes until 2021, CEO Benno Dorer told Reuters on Monday.
Clorox Products Struggling With Demand
The coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing across the globe and as demand increases more and more for hygienic goods, the world’s largest cleaning products maker – Clorox, is struggling to keep up. In California alone, the company said it has seen a six-fold increase in demand for disinfectants.
Much of the company’s products are currently under-stocked, including disinfecting wipes, Glad trash bags, Burt’s Bees lip balm and liquid bleach. Most of those, however, will be seeing an improvement in supply over the next four to six months, although wipes aren’t included in the list, CEO Benno Dorer told Reuters.
Dorer explained that disinfecting wipes fully stocking stores’ shelves will take much longer due to the “very complex supply chain to make them,” as the material used to produce wipes – polyester spunlace – is currently in short supply, as it is also used to make masks, medical wipes and medical gowns.
Clorox has been making “major” capital investments since May in order to ramp up output, including outsourcing some manufacturing to keep up with increasing demand. Fourth-quarter sales and earnings have topped analysts’ expectations, with revenue from health and wellness business seeing a rise of 33%.
