How to Automatically Transfer Photos from Apple iCloud Photos to Google Photos

Luckily, if you are an iCloud user, there is no need to upload your photos manually if you decide to test Google Photos

There are various cloud storage services that offer different features to their users. While some users would blindly state that some services are superior to others, other users would argue that the best service is very personal and depends on the user's unique needs.

However, finding the best service is not as easy as it might seem. There is no way to know if one is right for you unless you try it, but having to start from scratch and upload all your photos to a new platform could be a hassle, especially as new phones come with a lot of storage that encourages users to take more pictures.

Luckily, if you are an iCloud user, there is no need to upload your photos manually if you decide to test Google Photos.

Apple offers a service that automates the iCloud-to-Google ‌Photos transfer. The service operates by request and is currently available only to users located in Australia, Canada, the EU, UK, US, Iceland, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland.

To take advantage of the automatic photo transfer, you need to make a transfer request to Apple. The company will then verify the request and will make the transfer. According to Apple, this could take between three and seven days to complete. If you make changes to your iCloud during the transfer period, these alterations will not be reflected in the transfer.

Before you request a transfer, however, take a look at your media files as Apple warns that "some content — including shared albums, smart albums, photo stream content, live photos, some metadata, and photos and videos stored in other folders or locations — is not transferred at all."

Bear in mind that the file transfer doesn't remove or alter the copies stored on iCloud. If you want to delete some photos or videos, you will have to do so manually.

How to Request a Photo Transfer of Your iCloud to Google Photo

  1. Open your web browser and go to privacy.apple.com.
  2. Sign in to privacy.apple.com with your Apple ID credentials.
  3. Select Transfer a copy of your data.
  4. On the next page, you will see the size and the number of photo and video files that will be copied from ‌iCloud Photos.
  5. In the Choose where you'd like to transfer your photos section, click the "Select destination" drop-down menu and select Google Photos.
  6. Select the checkboxes next to Photos and/or Videos and click Continue.
  7. On the next page, you will be asked to verify that your Google account has enough storage to accommodate the selected media. Click Continue if your Google account has enough free space.
  8. On the last page, sign in to your Google account and select a location where you want the files to be saved.

Apple will notify you by email when the transfer is completed.
