The “Squad," formed of far-left freshmen of Congress, may see as many as three of its members endorsing Bernie Sanders for president.
The three members who are rumored to be backing Sanders are Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who will be appearing at a rally for the Senator shortly, Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has made her endorsement public and potentially Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who has yet to officially endorse a candidate. Although it is not yet certain if all of Sanders’ potential new endorsers will come to his rally in Saturday, AOC has said she will, in order to generate excitement for Sanders’ campaign.
“Bernie is leading a working class movement to defeat Donald Trump that transcends generation, ethnicity and geography,” Ilhan Omar stated on a Twitter post by the Sanders campaign, adding “I believe Bernie Sanders is the best candidate to take on Donald Trump in 2020.”
The as many as 3 three members of the house now backing Bernie is quite a hit to candidate Elizabeth Warren’s campaign, also a representative of the party’s progressive wing, who had risen up in polls in recent weeks. She was also attacked by several candidates in Tuesday’s Democratic debate.
The support from the “Squad” members will definitely be a great tool to attract young voters, seeing as the top three Democratic candidates are seniors – Sanders, 78, former Vice President Joe Biden, 76, and Warren – 70 years old.
The last “Squad” member, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, is not showing any signs of endorsing a candidate yet, be it Sanders or anyone else.
