Emergency coronavirus measures in Italy reach a nationwide scale, as Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte puts the country on lockdown.
Italy Under Quarantine
With cases of COVID-19 being confirmed in all 20 Italian regions and the death toll rising from 366 to 463 on Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has expanded the previous measures against coronavirus to a nationwide order for people to stay home.
“There is no more time. … The whole of Italy will become a protected zone,” Conte said, adding that the measures are there to protect the most vulnerable and susceptible to infection and death to the virus.
The measures include even more travel restrictions and a ban on public gatherings, as well as the nightlife in the country. Only those with a valid work or family reason that is absolutely essential and cannot be canceled or postponed will be allowed to travel, albeit everywhere they go, they will have to present justification.
Sporting events like football matches are also suspended alongside schools and universities.
Inmates at Italian prisons have begun rioting because of the measures, which also suspend any and all visits in an attempt to control the virus’ spread. So far, at least seven inmates have died in the riots across the country and at least nine are missing.
