Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti warns party hosts that utilities could be shut off if health orders continue to be ignored.
Cutting Off Power and Water for Party Hosts
LA Mayor Garcetti previously issued a similar threat in April to businesses defying his “safer at home” directive, however, this time the mayor is issuing the threat against party hosts. Garcetti said that starting Friday, if police respond to complaints of large gatherings and violations are confirmed, the Department of Water and Power will be instructed to discontinue service to the residence in question.
Garcetti said that he spoke to Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, with both being confident that shutting utilities off from private homes was legally defensible due to the circumstance.
“Just as we can shut down bars breaking alcohol laws, in places that are in criminal violations, we can shut them down,” the mayor said.
The move comes two days after a woman was shot to death and two others were injured at a mansion party in Beverly Crest which hundreds attended. Police were called to the residence around 6:30pm, after receiving over five complaints, although only traffic and parking violations were enforced.
California is currently number 1 in the US for most confirmed infections, with more than 530,000 confirmed cases and an average for the last week of almost 7,000 new cases daily.
