New Orleans Reports Zero COVID-19 Deaths in a Day

For the first time in over a month, New Orleans marked no deaths due to COVID-19 in a day, although state and city officials believe more should be done.

No Lives Lost Monday

New Orleans on Monday saw zero deaths related to coronavirus, although it didn’t last long, as the Orleans Parish and neighboring Jefferson Parish registered 68 new cases Monday, with a total of 13 deaths on Tuesday, although health officials have said that the figures could be skewed due to late reporting.

So far, Louisiana has had over 1,758 residents die to the disease, per the state’s Department of Health, as of Tuesday. The Orleans and Jefferson parishes account for more than 700 of the total number, with the two remaining the hardest-hit in the state. Experts believe that the high infection rate in New Orleans is tied to poverty in the city, with many residents having preexisting medical conditions and lacking healthcare.

Still, the state has, at least for now, passed its coronavirus peak, with it being in early April, registering more than 1,000 cases a day. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that despite the progress, more needs to be done, therefore extending the stay-at-home order until May 15.
