NY Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Calls for Cuomo's Resignation

The top Democratic lawmaker in New York, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, called for the resignation of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The request comes amidst allegations of sexual harassment and an ongoing investigation of falsifying counts of COVID-19 deaths in the state's nursing homes.

Calls for Cuomo’s Resignation

"New York is still in the midst of this pandemic and is still facing the societal, health, and economic impacts of it. We need to govern without daily distraction. For the good of the state Governor Cuomo must resign," said Stewart-Cousins in a statement. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie also condemned Cuomo but did not call for his resignation.

Despite the growing number of state Democratic lawmakers pushing for Cuomo to resign, in a press call on Sunday, the senator said that it would be "anti-democratic" for him to step down. Cuomo commented that it was the people of New York who have elected him, adding that New York lawmakers "don't override the people's will, they don't get to override elections."

Last week, Sen. Cuomo addressed the sexual harassment accusations, saying that his talk was "my way of doing friendly banter." While the senator apologized for actions that might have made others uncomfortable, he denied touching anyone inappropriately and called for an independent investigation.

The investigation will be handled by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Sen. Cuomo is also facing accusations of underreporting COVID-19 deaths in New York's nursing homes. Investigators report that officials' count of nursing home deaths is likely half the actual number.
