Swedish Company Attempts ‘Greener’ Method of Burying Americans

A new eco-friendly burial method called promession could be making its way into the U.S., with Kansas being the state of choice of the company that created the procedure.

What Is Promession?

The Swedish company Promessa named the procedure they’ve developed promession, and it could be quite innovative. The process consists of freezing the body with liquid nitrogen and afterwards “vibrating it into particles,” per the Kansas City Star.

Cost-effective and eco-friendly is how the founder of Promessa described the process, however promession is yet to be tested on humans, as the only subjects so far have been pigs.

“Greener” ways of burial have been becoming a hot topic In some states like Washington, where the composting of human bodies is allowed.

For the Swedish company looking to bring its method to the U.S., Kansas is an appealing state to start in, as a fire is not required to be used in the cremation process. The state’s attorney general, Derek Schmidt, gave his opinion shortly before Thanksgiving, saying that the decision is all up to the Kansas Board of Mortuary Arts.

A Democrat representative of the state, Dave Benson, spoke to the Star, and seemed to be considering drafting a bill to allow the new method to be implemented and used:

“If that’s what you want, hey, where’s the government’s interest in telling you not to?”
