The Pope Gives His Take on American Unrest Amid 2020 Riots

The Pope condemned the police-caused death of George Floyd, saying he is praying for him and “all those others who have lost their lives as a result of the sin of racism.” Pope Francis took some more time to address the social unrest in the US that followed Floyd’s death, with demonstrations starting out peacefully, but quickly turning into riots.

The Pope Condemns Violence

Francis said that no person should “tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form,” but despite that, spoke out against the violence caused by the nighttime riots, saying that it does nothing but destroy more and cause harm to others.

“Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost,”  Pope Francis

Demonstrations and protests have not only been happening in the United States, as the movement against police brutality has also inspired some in Europe and even Australia to go out on the streets and protest.

The Pope also quoted Archbishop Jose H. Gomez when talking about the matter, with Gomez asking how is it possible for a black man to be murdered in daylight with his calls for help being ignored and his killing recorded.

“It is true what Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, that riots are the language of the unheard. We should be doing a lot of listening right now,” Gomez added.
