Trump and Sessions Differences: A Major Theme in Sessions Senate Bid

President Trump aims and fires at former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who struggled to secure a majority in the Alabama Senate primary on Tuesday and now faces a runoff election.

No Support for Sessions from Trump

Trump has long criticized Sessions, ever since Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, which turned into a huge issue for the president through the years, recently ending in good news for Trump’s office due to lack of evidence.

Sessions believed recusal was his best option at the beginning of the “Russia Witch Hunt” due to the possibility of a conflict of interest, being the first senator to endorse Trump in 2016. Sessions resigned from his position as Attorney General after the 2018 midterm elections, passing the baton onto William Barr.

Although the President avoided talking about the Alabama primary until now, seeing the results, Trump could be open to supporting Sessions’ opponent in the runoff – former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville. However, nothing is clear, as Trump’s tweet takes a jab at Sessions but doesn’t hint in the slightest of an endorsement of Tuberville.

After polls closed Tuesday night, Sessions, previously having held an Alabama seat for 20 years, was neck to neck with Tuberville, with 31.6% and 33.4% respectively. The two will face off for the nomination on March 31, and whoever wins then will go on to face Democratic Senator Doug Jones in November.
