Trump Officially Signs Bill for the Creation of Space Force

President Donald Trump has officially signed a $738 billion defense bill this past Friday that addressed two key issues that require attention; the idea of paid paternal leave for new fathers and the creation of the new “Space Force” military branch.

The bill, known as The National Defense Authorization Act, included pay raises for military personnel, and it is the largest single investment in military power. Trump held a signing ceremony in front of troops at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, telling the troops that “Our military is now dominant. Together we are protecting our people.”

The president signed the bill before leaving for his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he will spend the rest of the year with his family.

The bill passed Congress after Trump agreed to include family and parental leave in the bill alongside the Space Force.

Congressional Democrats agreed to put forward the money for Space Force and Republicans, in turn, agreed to allow for parental and family leave to be added to the bill. It offers a full 12 weeks of paid leave for over 2 million civilian federal workers after a child has been born, adopted, or fostered into the family.

Ivanka Trump, President Trump’s daughter, personally lobbied on behalf of the family and parental leave legislation.

The defense funding in the bill will mean that the U.S military remains the strongest military in the world, with Trump saying that “no country…comes even close”. Trump also took the time to promote Space Force, the sixth branch of the American military and the first new branch to be created in over 70 years.

Trump told his supporters during a rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, “I will be able to tell my kids someday, and everyone else, ‘See that Space Force? That was my baby.’”

The bill was pushed through Congress on December 11. As well as including legislation about the creation of the Space Force and paid parental leave, the bill includes a pay rise of 3.1% for Pentagon personnel.
