Trump/WHO Feud Escalates as Tedros Hits Back

President Trump hinted that the administration is considering cutting off funding for the agency

Tensions between Trump and the World Health Organization have escalated, as the head of the WHO fired back at President Trump.

Politicizing the Coronavirus Situation?

WHO Director Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shot back after Trump criticized the agency and accused them of being “very China centric.”

“If you don’t want many more body bags you refrain from politicizing it – please quarantine politicizing COVID,” Dr. Tedros told reporters.

A day before the WHO responded to Trump’s criticism, the US president dropped a hint that the administration is considering cutting off funding for the agency, citing several reasons such as the WHO’s “China-centric” views and their initial handling of the pandemic, which Trump claimed could’ve been disastrous if tighter regulations weren’t implemented.

Dr. Tedros didn’t say much in his response directly to Trump or the US government, instead just urging all lawmakers to not politicize the virus and the situation, then proceeding to talk about unity and how a global response similar to the one that fought against smallpox is needed.

The US is the single largest contributor to the UN agency, with the most recent invoice being for roughly around $116 million per year, with contributions exceeding $400 million in 2017.
