Introduction to Apple’s Digital ID Initiative
Apple's Digital ID initiative is a transformative step aimed at replacing the traditional physical wallet with a digital version. This is achieved through the implementation of the digital driver's license and state ID feature on the iPhone and Apple Watch. This allows users to conveniently and securely carry their identification details in their Apple devices.
Eligibility and Limitations of the Digital License Feature
However, the accessibility of this feature substantially depends on the state from where the license or ID has been issued. Furthermore, it is important to note that a physical license is still mandatory during interactions with law enforcement. The digital ID can be used to quickly and conveniently verify an individual's identity at places such as airport security, where it can be presented directly from the device without having to unlock, show, or hand over the device.
Process of Adding Digital Driver’s License to Wallet App
The process of adding a digital driver's license to the Apple Wallet app is fairly straightforward. It requires the user to first choose the state and relevant ID in the Wallet app. Following this, the user must scan their physical ID and take a selfie for biometric authentication. These documents are sent to the state's Department of Transportation for verification. Once approved, the license or ID is securely stored in the Wallet app.
Security Measures for Digital ID
Apple has leveraged its existing security infrastructures to ensure that the data stored within the Apple Wallet app is thoroughly protected. The user's identity data is encrypted, safeguarding it from tampering and theft. The company's privacy policies are stringent, restricting any unnecessary access to users' data. The data is only presented digitally through encrypted communication directly between the device and the identity reader. Moreover, if the device is misplaced, the Find My app can be used to lock the device or erase its data remotely. The feature also supports the ISO 18013-5 mDL (mobile driver's license) standard, which provides an industry-wide guideline for the protection of consumer's privacy when presenting an ID or driver's license from a mobile device.
