A Highly Contagious New Strain of COVID-19 Has Been Spotted in the UK

A new strain of the COVID-19 virus has been discovered in the UK. Researches believe that it’s spreading extremely fast and has already infected 1,000 individuals. Due to the infection severity, London is forced to move to the highest level of coronavirus restrictions.

On Monday, Matt Hancock reported that the new COVID-19 variant he identified was found in southeastern England and it’s been analyzed by scientists at Port Down’s secretive military and public health research facility.

Hancock also added that the new virus strain was registered in approximately 60 UK areas, most of them in the South part of England.

At a press conference on Monday, the Chief Medical Officer of England Chris Whitty stated that they found no proof that the symptoms of the new coronavirus variant differ from the common ones.

Although the researchers did not find the reason for the latest coronavirus surge in London, Matt Hancock suggests that the rapid virus spread in South England is related to its new variant.

London is entering into Tier 3 at 12:01 am on Wednesday, which is the highest level of COVID-19 restrictions.

According to Matt Hancock, “there is currently nothing to suggest that this variant is more likely to cause serious disease” and “it’s highly unlikely this mutation would fail to respond to a vaccine.”

On Monday, Dr. Michael Ryan from the World Health Organization (WHO) said he is “aware of this variant” and added that the mutations of viruses are “quite common.”

Another WHO expert, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, stated that the new ‘N501Y’ coronavirus mutation has already been monitored by her colleagues, and “it’s come up in the context of a mink variant identified elsewhere.”

COVID-19 mink mutations have been observed in Denmark, the Netherlands, and the US.
