Amid Denuclearization Stalemate, Trump Hints at Meeting with North Korea

“It could happen soon,” were the words President Trump said when asked if a meeting with Kim Jong Un was in his plans.

New developments of nuclear-armed missiles targeting the U.S. from North Korea may call for a fourth summit with leader Kim Jong Un – something the U.S. President is yet to confirm and comment on.

Meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the reason the first Trump-Kim meeting became a reality last year and dismissed war notions in 2017, are due at the U.N., with a series of recent tests of short-range missiles and artillery systems made by North Korea, which could potentially be used to attack South Korea and Japan, carrying a degree of concern.

A diplomatic stalemate lasting months with the North’s push over sanctions reliefs and what disarmament steps should be taken in return should the U.S. agree to relieve sanctions. President Trump has said it is not the weapon tests or stagnation in talks that worries him but rather a sense of urgency in Seoul and elsewhere.

Praise for Trump has been coming from the North in recent days, with the President’s decision to fire former National Security Adviser John Bolton, and a pursuit of a “new method” in negotiations with Pyongyang, and although both parties hint at a possibility of diplomacy resuming between the two, annual U.S.-South Korean military drills are still seen as proof of hostility toward Pyongyang, North Korea says abandoning its nuclear power will not be possible unless there are no potential threats.
