The Neverending Story: The Great Impeachment Diversion

An alleged abuse of power on President Trump’s part and constant pressure from Democrats have pushed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into launching a formal impeachment inquiry against Trump.

“Betrayal of his oath of office,” as well as “No one is above the law,” were Nancy Pelosi’s words on the Trump-Ukraine situation, in which President Trump was supposedly trying to get dirt on Joe Biden through Ukraine’s help.

The most direct confrontation between the Democrats and Republicans finally comes in the form of the impeachment inquiry – bringing a fair amount of uncertainty in the upcoming 2020 election campaign.

Although Pelosi has been trying to ease the pressure and avoid the push for impeachment, a group of mostly fresh Democratic lawmakers were ultimately what brought about the inquiry. President Trump has remained calm about the situation, with confidence that the impeachment inquiry will backfire – he’d gain more support rather than lose it.

“Now is the time to act,” said Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, “To delay or to do otherwise would betray the foundation of our democracy,” he added in an address to the House.

The issue at hand is a call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in which it is speculated Trump asked for an investigation on former Vice President Biden and his son. 400$ million in military aid for Ukraine were also frozen a day before the call, something President Trump has acknowledged, however he denied using the funds to gain leverage.

“You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call,” President Trump said after authorizing a release of a transcript – available to the public Wednesday.

Pelosi’s “efforts to restrain her far-left conference have finally crumbled,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell commented on roughly two-thirds of House Democrats announcing impeachment probes before Pelosi’s announcement Tuesday.

“The actions of the Trump presidency revealed dishonorable facts of the president’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of his national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections,” she said.

The President and his team have already responded by attacking Democrats on Twitter, with the conclusion that: “While Democrats ‘Sole Focus’ is fighting Trump, President Trump is fighting for you.”
