Answer to Immigration Conundrum Tucked Away in History

Criticism of the president has come fast and furious since last week, when Trump initially made his thoughts on the caravans of illegals currently invading America.

The left has consistently hammered the president since the summer of 2015 over his desire to see American borders enforced and protected from the scourge of illegal immigration.

The hard dose of truth delivered by then candidate Trump early in his presidential campaign regarding the influx of drugs, gang members, human sex slave trafficking and illegal workers was immediately spun into a narrative unfairly painting Donald Trump as a racist and insensitive dictator in waiting.

From an economic perspective alone, our illegal immigration problem has already reached the point where the mobilization of border states’ National Guard forces would be well justified. According to a report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the American taxpayer is on the hook for a record 135 billion dollars a year for illegal immigration. The average cost for individual illegal immigrant is $8,075 each. In the state of New York that cost more than triples to $25,000.

State and local governments are currently being saddled by almost two-thirds of the costs, at over 88 billion dollars. The federal government is shouldering 45 billion dollars in costs for illegals.

Regarding state costs, Gov. Jerry Brown’s California leads the list at 23 billion dollars per year, which is more than double the next state on the list Texas at 11 billion dollars. New York comes in third at 7.4 billion dollars. Is it any wonder why the Justice Department, under immigration hardliner Jeff Sessions has taken a more aggressive stance against California and its sanctuary illegal immigration policies?

Recently, debate has been ignited over the possible limits of the president’s discretionary use of military funds secured by the recent omnibus passage for border enforcement.

During the George W. Bush administration, "Bush 43" called for up to 6,000 National Guard members to assist with surveillance, installing fences and vehicle barriers in a support mission called Operation Jump Start that provided significant assistance to securing the southern U.S. border for a two-year period.

Some of the successes of Operation Jump Start in its early implementation (From June 15^th 2006 to August 15^th 2006) included:

Illigal Immigrant Apprehensions: 5,003

Vehicle Seizures: 110

Marijuana Seizures (pounds): 28,577

Cocaine Seizures (pounds): 1,447

Currency Seizures: $11,052

Illegal Immigrant Rescues: 31

Trump inherited a country over $19 trillion in debt and suffering through a period of anemic economic growth. Despite the ongoing issue of illegal immigration, Trump has been able to kick start the economy while almost doubling the average the GDP growth rate we saw under President Obama. An amazing accomplishment for sure, but there is always room for improvement in a country that still spends over 668 billion dollars per year on 126 different welfare programs according to a 2013 report from the Cato institute (spending by the state and local governments pushed that figure up to $1 trillion per year).

One president that had success in enforcing immigration laws was President Dwight Eisenhower. While campaigning for president, Donald Trump referred to the exploits of President Eisenhower several times. "Let me just tell you that Dwight Eisenhower, good president, great president, people liked him," Trump said at the fourth Republican primary debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "Moved a 1.5 million illegal immigrants out of this country, moved them just beyond the border. They came back. Moved them again beyond the border, they came back. Didn't like it. Moved them way south. They never came back."

Operation Wetback was successful in targeting illegal workers in the fields of labor where they were being exploited. This program only needed 750 immigration and border patrol officers and investigators, 300 jeeps, cars and buses and seven airplanes. Operation Wetback processed 1,074,277 returns. These returns were defined as "confirmed movement of an inadmissible or deportable alien out of the United States not based on an order of removal."

It was carried out efficiently, effectively and at a minimal cost to the American taxpayer. I think the time may have come for President Trump to get the "caravans" moving in the other direction.
