Biden Campaign Staff Donates to Group Bailing Out Riot Participants

The campaign declined to answer whether or not the donations were coordinated

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s campaign staff has been making donations to a group that bails out Minneapolis rioters protesting the handling of George Floyd's arrest last week.

Minnesota Freedom Fund and the Biden Campaign

At least 13 Biden campaign staff members tweeted out on Friday and Saturday that they made contributions to the Minnesota Freedom Fund – a group that opposes the practice of cash bail, and is currently using the donations they receive to bail out those arrested in Minneapolis following the protests, which saw the city engulfed in flames.

The campaign declined to answer whether or not the donations were coordinated, although spokesman Andrew Bates told Reuters that Biden opposes cash bail as a “modern day debtors prison,” also adding that Biden agrees with the protesters’ anger, but not with the violence.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday said that many of the arrested in the violent protests, which plunged Minneapolis into chaos, were from out of state, although he did not give a number on how many were actually jailed.

President Trump on Friday criticized the ongoing riots, calling the violent protesters “thugs,” and saying that if worst comes to worst, deadly force might have to be used. Despite his statement, Trump expressed sympathy regarding George Floyd’s case, who was killed last week by a police officer.

Minnesota could be one of the most important states in the upcoming elections, with Trump hoping to win the state this year, after previously losing out by 1.5% to Hillary Clinton in 2016.
