New England Patriots superstar Tom Brady cited "personal family matters" for missing the annual White House visit by Superbowl winners.

His Statement:

“I am so happy and excited that our team is being honored at the White House today. Thank you to the president for hosting this honorary celebration and for supporting our team for as long as I can remember. In light of some recent developments, I am unable to attend today’s ceremony, as I am attending to some personal family matters. Hopefully, if we accomplish the goal of winning a championship in the future years, we will back on the South Lawn again soon. Have a great day!”

The Boston Herald reports that Brady will be visiting his mother who is fighting an illness which she has dealt with for about a year. They are together in Boston today.

"Mom's doing better," Brady reported to ESPN Boston. "She's been through a lot. My dad has been through a lot. It's been a really hard year for them. Our prayers are with her. She's the best mom in the world, so it was nice to win for her, nice for her to be there."

Brady also missed a White House ceremony in 2015 which was hosted by then President Barack Obama. He was photographed at the Gillette Stadium that day, creating speculation that he may have declined to attend for political reasons, according to ESPN.

He was seen possessing a "Make America Great Again" hat during the campaign season so no such speculation regarding his abstaining for political reasons should exist in this instance.

Tom Brady plans on returning to the Patriots this season in defense of their Superbowl Championship.
