Conflict of Interest? Schiff Named By Pelosi as a Prosecutor in Senate Trial

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has named the prosecutors for Trump’s impeachment trial as new information emerges regarding the Ukraine affair.

Schiff Among the Team

Before even voting to send the charges to the Senate, Pelosi had named her seven-member team, which will be led by the Intelligence Committee’s Adam Schiff and the Judiciary Committee’s Jerry Nadler. Both of them led the House impeachment proceedings, which resulted in the Democrats’ favor last month as Trump was impeached and is now awaiting his Senate trial.

Schiff also released some new records from Lev Parnas about the Ukraine strategy, which includes an exchange with another man regarding fired Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch and a supposed surveillance plan.

“If McConnell makes this the first trial in history without witnesses, it will be exposed for what it is and that is an effort to cover up for the president,” Schiff said, hoping that the new evidence would pressure McConnell even more into submitting to Democrats’ demands to allow witnesses to testify before the trial has even begun.

McConnell is sticking to his belief that whether or not there should be a vote to allow witness testimony is a decision to be made after the trial’s opening statements.

“This isn’t really about Ukraine policy or military money. This has been naked partisanship all along,” McConnell said of the impeachment, as Trump also tweeted out that impeachment was “another Con Job by the Do Nothing Democrats.”

The Senate is expected to become an impeachment court as early as Thursday, although proceedings won’t really begin until next week after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. McConnell has said that all GOP senators agree to his plan to decide on the issue of witnesses after the trial’s opening statements, although it’s expected that in the Republican-controlled Senate Trump will be acquitted.
