Brexit and the Conservatives dominated the UK elections, as Boris Johnson’s Party took control of the UK Parliament over the opposition Labour Party.
Brexit Coming Soon?
Using Brexit as the main policy matter in its campaign, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party absolutely trounces the competition this weeks elections, earning 364 seats, with Labour Party coming in second with 203, its lowest count since 1935.
“We did it – we pulled it off, didn’t we? We broke the gridlock, we ended the deadlock, we smashed the roadblock!” Johnson told supporters.
The key difference, many believe, is what the campaigns focused on. With the Conservatives focusing on Brexit and Johnson’s motivation to “get it done,” apparently it was much more appealing to voters than Labour’s completely different tone, looking at domestic problems such as taxing the rich, nationalizing industries such as railroads and water companies, free internet access for all and others.
Johnson’s speeches, including one to his Uxbridge constituency, where he said that the “historic” election “gives us now in this new government, the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people, to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country,” and his willingness to act must have shifted the support towards Conservatives in a big way. In the 2017 elections the victory was not so huge however, with Conservatives winning 318 seats, verses Labour's 262.
Now armed with an overwhelming majority, Johnson has space to move freely, and will be pushing to “Get Brexit done” and have his Parliament ratify the deal with the EU, taking Britain out of the bloc by Jan. 31st.
Another item on Johnson’s agenda beyond powering through the Phase 1 of Brexit, is dealing with Phase 2 as fast as possible – hopefully by this time next year. Phase Two would be agreeing upon the future relationship between the UK and the EU, with both sides likely having to make big compromises to make it work.
