Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is almost certainly running for a second four-year term, although any speculation on a White House bid was dismissed.
DeSantis Will Run for 2nd Term, But No Presidential Bid
Republican Gov. DeSantis said in an interview that it was a “safe assumption” that he would be running for a second term as governor, although the announcement has not yet been made, it would likely be coming towards the end of the year.
DeSantis completely dismissed the idea of him running for president in 2024, saying that it is “total garbage.”
In just eight years, DeSantis went from a freshman in Congress to governor of the US’ third-largest state, with many viewing him as a potential GOP candidate for president. New pressure is mounting on the governor, however, as the November elections draw close.
DeSantis partially owes his term as Florida’s governor to President Donald Trump’s endorsement, and could face political reckoning if Republicans lose the White House later this year. This would just puts more pressure on the Governor in his attempt at reelection.
Approval ratings had risen for DeSantis prior the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 however, criticism of DeSantis started mounting as Democrats blasted him for refusing to issue a statewide mask mandate and being slow to put the state under lockdown, among other issues.
