Edward Snowden stated he plans to seek Russian citizenship. The news comes just a week after Lindsay Mills, Edward Snowden's wife, announced they are expecting a boy, who will be born a Russian citizen.
Can Snowden Have Dual Citizenship?
On Monday, Snowden wrote on Twitter the couple is applying for dual U.S.-Russian citizenship because "After years of separation from our parents, my wife and I have no desire to be separated from our son.”
Snowden’s attorney, Anatoly Kucherena, reported that last month, the ex-contractor and his wife were granted permanent residency in Russia. Kucherena also stated that Snowden can obtain a Russian passport without renouncing his American nationality and the legal process will start soon.
On Twitter, the former US contractor added that he and his wife plan to be “raising our son with all the values of the America we love — including the freedom to speak his mind” and that he looked forward to the day he can return to the U.S., “so the whole family can be reunited.”
Last year, Edward Snowden said he could have returned to the US if he was guaranteed fair prosecution.
