After trying to interpose the court for 11 hours, former gang member Brandon Bernard (40) was executed at a federal prison by lethal. Bernad was 18 years old when he participated in the double murder of Todd and Stacie Bagley from Texas.
Controversy over Bernard’s Execution
Brandon Bernard's lawyer attempted to hold the execution, claiming that the prosecutors withheld proof that would have resulted in a life sentence for Bernard, however, his attempt turned unsuccessful. On Thursday, Bernard’s plea for an emergency stay was rejected by the Supreme Court, and he was executed at 9:27 p.m.
Defining the execution as "a stain on America's criminal justice system," Bernard’s lawyer Robert C. Owen stated that his client made a terrible mistake at 18, stating Bernard " he did not kill anyone, and he never stopped feeling shame and profound remorse for his actions,” spending the rest of his life trying to show he “was not that person.”
Just before being administered the lethal injection, Bernard spoke calmly to the relatives of the couple he killed, saying, “I’m sorry” and adding that these are the only words "that completely capture how I feel now and how I felt that day."
In her Twitter account, Kim Kardashian West asked her followers to appeal to Donald Trump to commute Bernard's sentence. After her last call to Brandon, she wrote that it was the “Hardest call I've ever had," adding she had burst into tears.
