FDA Gives Emergency Clearance to Pfizer's COVID-19 Vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration(FDA) gave an emergency clearance of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. After approving the vaccine, the FDA initiated a  massive campaign for the distribution of approximately 3 million vaccine doses to medical facilities nationwide.

Pfizer Vaccine Finally Gets Approved

The FDA’s decision was applauded by Pfizer’s CEO Albert Bourla, who said that they are pleased with the majority vote and added that “if the FDA issues an authorization, stand at the ready to bring this vaccine to people in the U.S. in an effort to help combat this devastating pandemic."

On Thursday, senior CDC official Dr. Nancy Messonnier told the FDA that the first vaccine recipients will be observed by the "active surveillance systems" for any potential adverse side effects and pointed out that "vaccine safety and effective monitoring is a top priority for the U.S government.”

Pfizer vaccine trials proved 95% efficient for individuals between 18 and 64 years, however, some people with severe allergic reactions, weak immune systems, or pregnancy cannot take the immunization.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 surge in the US continues with hospitals reaching maximum capacity at an alarming rate. Death cases also hit a new record high in the country reaching 3,000 related to COVID-19. The Johns Hopkins University reported that since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 15 million Americans have been infected with the virus, and approximately 300,000 have lost their lives.
