The COVID-19 pandemic has already hit over 1 million people worldwide. According to a survey by Johns Hopkins University, the grim milestone was reached only nine months after China reported the first COVID-19 death case last January. Public health experts believe that the actual fatal cases – the recorded deaths plus the unrecorded deaths – are much higher.
Coronavirus Deaths Surpass 1 Million Globally
United States
Currently, the US is the world leader in both the number of dead and the number of infected people during the pandemic. While some Northeastern states were heavily infected with COVID-19 at an earlier stage and managed to use social distancing and masking to push down the new cases by the spring, other states moved to re-open fast which fueled a bigger wave of deaths across the US in the summer. Despite lowering the cases later, recently, the deaths have slowly begun increasing again.
Brazil
Brazil takes second place in the worldwide death toll, and now it’s in trouble again. The President of the country had previously underestimated the COVID-19 threat many times, which led to an increased death toll in July and August. A month ago, the daily death count began dropping, however.
India
India has the third-highest death toll. Since the government lifted the strict lockdown in May, infections and death cases have been constantly flying up. When these cases are measured as a share of India's population, India ranks fairly low, which contrasts both Brazil and the United States. Nevertheless, it seems that over the past few weeks, the daily death count in India has hit a plateau. Yet, the total number of death cases in the country remains extremely high, with an average of about 1,100 deaths each day during the past week.
Mexico
Despite Mexico’s struggle not to follow the high death tolls in the US, Brazil, and India, the country has also hit their highest number of average daily deaths over the past two weeks.
Western Europe
When it comes to death statistics, the United Kingdom is ranked fifth in the world. Although the death toll dropped for a few months, it unfortunately has started to creep up again. The situation in Spain and France is even more disturbing as in both countries the daily new cases and new deaths have significantly increased over the past couple of weeks.
