Hackers breach HealthCare.gov and Acquire Personal Data of 75,000 Customers

Hackers have managed to breach a government health care system used to register customers into health insurance plans. The breach was confirmed on Friday by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The attackers were able to extract personal data of 75,000 customers. Federal law enforcement has been notified and is investigating the breach.

The hackers targeted a system linked with Healthcare.org which is used by agents and brokers to sign-up prospective customers into insurance plans. Officials state this back-end system has been shut down to resolve the issue. The regular system used by consumers in HealthCare.gov is still up and running. Given the amount of sensitive information used in the sign-up process,  such as social security numbers, affected customers will be provided with credit protection.
