Insensitive Buttigieg Photo and Caption Resurfaces on Twitter

2020 Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is under heavy fire for posing at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin.

Insensitive and ‘Disrespectful’

A 2017 photo that Chasten Buttigieg, the candidate’s husband, had taken and posted, recently resurfaced and many have been quick to attack Buttigieg for posing at the Holocaust memorial with the caption “This guy.”

“Honestly, I think it’s more the, uh, caption than the picture itself. Something about implying how dreamy your husband is with a Holocaust memorial as the backdrop comes off as a bit tone-deaf, so it’s actually a decent microcosm of the Buttigieg campaign,” one user said, with many others joining in calling the caption and photo itself “inappropriate” and “disrespectful.”

Despite many people being offended, and plenty of movements and requests for people to stop taking pictures at such sites, such as a campaign by Israeli comedian Shahak Shapira to shame anyone who takes selfies at the memorial, not everyone took it as bad.

There were plenty who also defended Buttigieg, instead condemning other people who were far more disrespectful:

“He looks more respectful than most people who visit the memorial nowadays. Anyone who’s been there can attest.” - Buttigieg Supporter on Twitter

“As someone who lost relatives in the Holocaust, including my great grandparents, your using this to smear Pete is absolutely appalling to me. Try a little self-reflection.” - Buttigieg Supporter on Twitter
