Katie Hill formally announced her resignation on Sunday following after reports of an affair with a congressional staffer sparked a House Ethics Committee investigation.
It is with a broken heart that today I announce my resignation from Congress. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but I believe it is the best thing for my constituents, my community, and our country.

Multiple reports regarding Hill’s affairs have featured compromising and intimate photos of the congresswoman and private text messages between Hill and the unnamed staffer, capturing various details of Hill’s three-way relationship with her husband and the female staffer have led up to the resignation.
“Congresswoman Katie Hill came to Congress with a powerful commitment to her community and a bright vision for the future, and has made a great contribution as a leader of the Freshman class. She has acknowledged errors in judgment that made her continued service as a member untenable. ... We must ensure a climate of integrity and dignity in Congress, and in all workplaces,”
-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.
Hill acknowledged her “inappropriate” relationship with the female campaign staffer, saying she began the relationship in the final years of an “abusive marriage.”

Republican challengers for Hill’s seat have pounced on the opportunity to take back the district, taking full advantage of the controversy to support their campaigns.
