Louisville Votes No Confidence on Mayor Fischer’s Handling of Breonna Taylor Case

Louisville city council voted a “no confidence” resolution against Mayor Greg Fischer, for the handling of Breonna Taylor’s case. Another resolution insisting on the mayor’s resign ended in favor of one looking for specific reforms.

The list of recommendations included calls for increasing affordable housing, limiting development in at-risk neighborhoods unless the development is black-owned and affordable, and completing a top-to-bottom review of the police department by the end of 2020.

The Situation Remains Tense in Louisville

After police officers fatally shot medical technician Breonna Taylor, the situation in Louisville has been tense. According to authorities, Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, a convicted drug dealer, used her address to receive packages. However, the search warrant inventory document stated that no drugs or money have been found.

Authorities said they were fired upon while entering Taylor’s house, but the victim’s family claimed their home was broken into and Walker fired his legally owned gun to defend himself. In June, Louisville officials banned the use of no-knock warrants, which allowed police to forcibly enter people's homes without warning.

On Tuesday, Taylor’s family filed a wrongful death suit for $12 million against the city of Louisville, which did not require the city to admit any wrongdoing. Furthermore, Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, sued three officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department this past April. The court alleged the officers have used excessive force and the search was grossly negligent. In July, a complaint by Taylor's family claimed the raid was connected to a gentrification project.

None of the officers involved in the case have been charged. Two of them and the detective who obtained the search warrant were placed on administrative leave, while, the third one - Brett Hankison, was fired in June.
