A Portland nursing home was shutdown after an outbreak of the Coronavirus claimed 28 lives, with more than 110 infections.
Foster Creek Suspended
Oregon health officials ordered an emergency suspension of Portland’s Healthcare at Foster Creek nursing facility after at least 117 cases of the virus and 28 deaths, due to what was described by the DHS as “a consistent inability to adhere to basic infection control standards.”
Another argument for the suspension of the license that Oregon’s DHS brought up was that “continued operation poses a serious danger to public health and safety,” and ordered that all residents be moved. The decision comes after repeated investigations, which began in late March. On multiple occasions the facility’s staff were found to not change their face masks during shifts or wash their hands.
The nursing home released a statement to Fox 12 Oregon on Tuesday, saying that the facility’s staff were putting their own lives on the line to “ensure continuity of care for our residents,” expressing the facility’s disappointment with health officials’ decision. The nursing home added that it’s number one priority has always been the safety of its residents and employees, continuing that the facility itself should be a model to show that “only by working together are we able to overcome the challenges we face during this unprecedented moment.”
Resident’s relatives, however, disagree with the statement, with at least one spouse claiming that the facility provided misleading information, despite promises to take “good care” of her husband.
