Flying cars have been a cultural icon of a futuristic world. Now, Boeing and Porsche are coming together to turn science fiction into science fact. The companies are getting together to explore what they call “premium urban air mobility” – which is essentially flying cars. Or at least some sort of manned flying vehicle the size of a conventional vehicle.
While this deal might not see the immediate release of a line of flying cars, it’s undoubtedly true that this is the first significant step taken towards that direction. This is the first time two companies have committed so strongly to bring the concept into reality. The two industry giants have added an electric vertical-take-off-and-landing (VTOL) vehicle to their list of joint tasks.
Porsche Engineering Services GmbH and Studio F.A Porsche are going to work together with engineers from Boeing to assess the marketing potential and use cases of personal aerial transport.
“This collaboration builds on our efforts to develop a safe and efficient new mobility, ecosystem and provides an opportunity to investigate the development of a premium urban air mobility vehicle with a leading automotive brand. Porsche and Boeing together bring precision engineering, style, and innovation to accelerate urban air mobility worldwide.”
- Steve Nordlund, Vice President and General Manager for Boeing NeXt
Boeing is taking the lead when it comes to press releases and other related statements for the media. The company also released some new renderings that appear to show a compact aircraft. This could potentially be the first look at their new flying car prototype. The thing looks great and who hasn’t dreamed of one day having their own flying car?
A study by Porsche Consulting in 2018 postulated the idea that the urban air mobility market would really hit a peak around 2025. Porsche are making their move early to be on the ground floor with research and development. With an established partner in the aerospace field like Boeing on their side, Porsche could become the first car maker to explore this untapped market.
