Wall Watch: Trump Vetoes Attempt to End Emergency Declaration on Border

President Trump vetoed a joint resolution of Congress regarding the southern border with Mexico, with the resolution being to terminate the declaration of a national emergency on the border.

“The situation on our southern border remains a national emergency, and our armed forces are still needed to help confront it,” Trump said in the veto message. Previously, he declared the national emergency to circumvent Congress and acquire funds to pay for the wall, which promised to build during his 2016 campaign.

The Democratic-led House passed the joint resolution 236-174, with 11 Republicans and one independent joining them in favor, with the Republican-led Senate also approving the measure, by 54-41.

It’s likely the two-thirds majorities in both chambers, required to override the veto, won’t be gathered, just like in March, when Trump used his first veto on a similar measure.

Many Congress members from both parties have been unhappy about Trump redirecting money from the military to funding the wall, some of the funds being for housing and schools for members of the armed forces and their families. Congress still refuses to meet Trump’s demands for funding, giving some only for border fencing and barriers.
