Shift in Voter Sentiment
This latest data marks a significant upward trend for Barr, who has seen a four-point increase in support since February. Despite Barr's current momentum, the race remains fluid. Approximately 29% of GOP voters remain undecided as the May 19 primary approaches, suggesting that nearly a third of the electorate has yet to commit to a candidate.
The Trump Factor
While President Donald Trump has praised all three leading contenders, he has not issued an official endorsement in the race. The poll highlights the weight of a potential endorsement, as 46% of Republican voters stated that Trump’s backing would make them more likely to support a candidate. Conversely, 41% said it would have no impact, and 13% noted it would make them less likely to offer their support.
Candidate Platforms and Context
The winner of this primary will compete to fill the seat held by Senator Mitch McConnell, who is retiring after a 42-year career in the Senate. Rep. Andy Barr has centered his campaign on several key pillars:
-
Border Security: Implementing stricter national border policies.
-
Economic Policy: Advocating for further tax cuts.
-
Second Amendment: Strengthening gun rights protections.
The Emerson College/FOX56 poll surveyed 1,050 likely Kentucky voters from March 29-31. The results carry a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.
