Mississippi Manhunt: Search Underway for Escaped Convicts

Two inmates have escaped from a Mississippi State Penitentiary amid a week of riots at prisons in the state. The Mississippi Department of Corrections sent out a Facebook post about the two men; 42-year-old David May and 27-year-old Dillion Williams. The post says the men were discovered to be missing during an emergency count of inmates at around 1:45 A.M on Saturday.

The department didn’t say why they had called for the emergency count, but the prison – Parchman Prison – has seen three violent deaths in the past week. That may be related to why the count was called.

Parchman is the oldest institution in the state. It was opened in 1901 and covers around 18,000 acres of farmland according to the website for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The prison has 3,560 beds and is home to male offenders that are classified as being in protective custody, administrative segregation, administrative long-term segregation, and those on death row.

May is currently serving a life sentence for two counts of aggravated assault. Williams has a 40-year sentence for residential burglary and aggravated assault. Both men are African American with brown eyes, black hair, and a medium build.

Emergency Response Teams and K9 Units Deployed

The Mississippi Department of Corrections sent out the emergency response team and K9 unit to search for the men. They are being assisted by local and state law enforcement. Anyone who has any information about the men is urged to contact the Department of Corrections at 662-745-6611 or get in touch with their nearest law enforcement agency.

The deaths at Parchman are three of the five deaths that have occurred in prisons across the state in the past week. The violence is believed to be connected to gangs in the prisons.

Riots and Murder: A Tough Week for Mississippi Prisons

Guards across Mississippi prisons have been struggling to keep control over restive inmates since the violence began at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville on Saturday. The latest death occurred on Friday when 36-year-old Denoris Howell was found dead in his cell with blood around a neck wound.

Terrandance Dobbins, 40, was killed on Sunday in Leakesville. Walter Gates, 25, was stabbed to death on Tuesday at Parchman in a fight where other inmates were severely injured. On Thursday, 26-year-old Gregory Emary was killed at the Chickasaw County Regional Correctional Facility. Roosevelt Holliman, 32, was killed in a fatal stabbing at Parchman on Thursday.

All prions in the state were locked down on Friday, with all visitations canceled and all inmates ordered to remain in their cell. State correction officials continue to refuse to say exactly how many prisoners or guards have been injured as a result of the riots.

Commissioner Pelicia Hall issued a statement on Friday simply saying “These are trying times for the Mississippi Department of Corrections.”

Update: As of January 5, David May, one of the two escaped inmates, has been captured by authorities. According to statements by law enforcement officials, May was captured earlier this Sunday by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshals Service and Mississippi Department of Corrections.
