Trudeau Bans All Assault Type Weapons Following Nova Scotia Massacre

Trudeau said that gun violence brings only death, sadness and suffering to the people.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced that all assault-style weapons will be banned.

Ban on 1,500 Models and Variants

The AR-15 rifle, as well as some “1,500 models and variants” will be banned in the country, PM Justin Trudeau announced Friday. The firearms in the list, as well as some components, will be banned from sales, use or imports.

The order comes two weeks after the Nova Scotia shooting, in which a gunman shot and killed 22 people. The ban, however, will not be taking full effect for the next two years in order “to protect owners of newly prohibited firearms from criminal liability while they take steps to comply with these new rules.”

Exceptions will also be made for people in indigenous communities and those who hunt to feed their families, although that will only last until April 30, 2022, and no items will be taken off the list.

Trudeau said that gun violence brings only death, sadness and suffering to the people, calling for it to end by banning assault-style weapons, saying they have “no place in Canada.”
