President Donald Trump and his family go down into a bunker as the Secret Service clashes with protesters.

Mayhem Near the White House

The New York Times on Friday reported that hundreds were gathering outside the White House to protest the killing of George Floyd by a policeman in Minneapolis on May 25, as tensions keep rising across the country.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were taken to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center – a bunker under the White House, as protesters got dangerously close to the White House. Despite the proximity, Trump tweeted Saturday morning that he “couldn’t have felt more safe,” adding that people would have been “really badly hurt, at least,” if the protesters actually managed to breach the White House fence.

From Friday to Sunday, more than 60 Secret Service officers and agents sustained injuries in the clashes with the rioters. The protests began on Friday with many taking to the streets to condemn police brutality, with some trying to knock over security barriers, and at least six Secret Service vehicles being vandalized, as all sorts of items, including bricks, rocks and bottles, were thrown at officers and agents.

At least 11 employees had to be treated at local hospitals, albeit with no danger to their lives. DC police helped Service Service agents out by providing riot gear and helmets, with the city’s mayor Muriel Bowser pleading for the protests to remain peaceful, while empathizing with the outrage following George Floyd’s killing.

“The Secret Service respects the right to assemble, and we ask that individuals do so peacefully for the safety of all,” the agency said.
