A proposal to leave about 200 American troops in eastern Syria is under consideration by President Trump.
With the Pentagon chief saying all U.S. troops leaving Syria would move on and continue operations against the Islamic State group in western Iraq, and Defense Secretary Mark Esper saying their missions will be to “help defend Iraq” and “perform a counter-ISIS mission,” a proposal is coming in to leave 200 troops in Syria to combat ISIS remnants in the region. Their purpose would be to prevent Syrian government forces attempts’ of seizing control of oil facilities.
“The ceasefire is holding up very nicely. There are some minor skirmishes that have ended quickly. New areas being resettled with the Kurds,” Trump quoted Esper, on the agreement between the U.S. and Turkey last Thursday for a temporary suspension of military operations in northern Syria to allow the Kurds to withdraw to a safe zone along the Turkish and Syrian border.
