UN Donates 250k Masks to Help Combat Coronavirus in NYC

A whopping 250,000 face masks will be distributed in New York City, the United Nations announced Saturday.

“These masks, in surplus to United Nations requirements, will be given to the medical professionals in New York City who have been working courageously, selflessly, and tirelessly in response to the spread of COVID-19 across the boroughs in the hope that they play some small role in saving lives,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

The UN will be working with the NYC mayor’s office to move the masks to facilities across the city and then distribute them, as New York remains the Coronavirus epicenter and hardest-hit location in the country, with more than 52,000 confirmed cases and at least 728 deaths.

The move to help New York with the crisis comes days after the announcement of the creation of a $2 billion international fund aimed at helping the poorer parts of the world in dealing with the Coronavirus outbreak.

Meanwhile, US-China political tensions are rising as the US keeps on pushing for the UN Security Council to state that COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, with many officials claiming that China is more concerned with “saving face than saving lives,” and criticizing the “mishandling of the outbreak.”
