Could COVID-19 have escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan? US officials are currently investigating how the new coronavirus came to be, including the possibility that the virus emerged from a lab in China’s Wuhan.
The Wuhan Lab Theory
Intelligence sources told the Washington Post that two “sensitive” diplomatic cables about inadequate safety measures were issued by US science diplomats sent to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The warnings were about risky viral disease experiments being conducted, specifically on bats, which are the most likely source of COVID-19. The cable also stated that the matter represented a “risk of a new SARS-like pandemic,...”
“More and more we’re hearing the story... we are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation,” -Statement by President Trump on Wednesday’s coronavirus press briefing.
The goal of the scientist was to “sound the alarm” about the lab’s safety conditions, with officials calling for help with precautions to ensure the safety of the dangerous research in the facility. Sources also told Fox News similar details, believing that “patient zero” was actually a worker at the laboratory, in which bat-to-human transmission was being studied. The suspected patient zero would later going out tp the Wuhan region and spread the new virus.
As the investigation continues, while the evidence is yet to be conclusive, sources say they have “increasing confidence” that COVID-19 could indeed be a runaway virus from the Wuhan Institute of Virology or a nearby laboratory. Officials also doubted the wet market as the source of the virus as bats were never sold in Wuhan’s market, which is in dangerous proximity to laboratories in the city.
“More and more we’re hearing the story... we are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation,” President Trump said when asked about the report at Wednesday’s coronavirus press briefing.
