China Insulates Itself from World Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

China is closing itself off to almost all foreigners as fears rise over the possibility of an import of a new strand of COVID-19.

Visas and Residence Permits Temporarily Suspended

As the Coronavirus keeps spreading around the world, the virus itself doesn’t remain the same – new strands of the virus are beginning to appear depending on the location and conditions. As such, China fears a potential second outbreak after making it through the initial infection, thus “temporarily suspending the entry into China by foreign nationals holding visas or residence permits.”

The announcement didn’t specify how long this would remain in effect for, although anyone wishing to enter China will have to apply for a new visa. The move is the latest in a series meant to isolate the country from the world temporarily as more than 500 imported cases of the virus have been confirmed.

New infections have been slowing down to almost nothing in recent weeks in China, with only Wuhan remaining on lockdown. The mutation of the virus and its importation, however, is something China isn’t looking to experience, as Beijing and other cities announced earlier this week that all international arrivals will be quarantined, with Beijing adding testing for the virus at a designated facility.

Businesses have also begun fearing foreigners, despite the majority of imported cases being traced back to Chinese citizens returning from overseas. Gyms, hotels, and likely many other businesses are now refusing to allow foreign nationals to enter.
