CNN Poll Sees Presidential Race Tightening

Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s lead over President Trump is shrinking according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

Excitement for the Elections, Gap Narrows

Since June polling, which showed a massive lead for Biden over President Trump, a new CNN poll shows that the gap is becoming more and more narrow between the two, although Biden still has a small lead over the president.

The poll also shows that a majority of voters (53%) are “extremely enthusiastic” about voting in November. 50% of registered voters, interviewed for the survey, support the Biden-Harris ticket, while 46% support Trump and Pence, with the poll’s margin of error being plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Across 15 battleground states, Trump and Biden are basically tied, with 48% and 49% backing them respectively, although 10 of the states were previously won by Trump in 2016, representing a more Republican-leaning playing field for the polls.

56% of men are now backing Trump and 40% are going for Biden compared to June when they were roughly even, with those between the ages of 35 and 64 leaning more towards President Trump, and independents being close to even with 46% backing Biden and 45% supporting Trump.

When it comes to job approval, 42% approve of how Trump is handling his job as president, while 54% disapprove, as his favorability rating remains low with 55% seeing Trump unfavorably and 43% seeing him favorably and Biden’s favorability rating being evenly split (46% favorable, 47% unfavorable).

The polls, however, now include Biden’s choice for Vice President – Sen. Kamala Harris. Harris’ favorability rating is positive by a small margin (41% favorable, 38% unfavorable), although most see Biden’s picking Harris as a good decision (52%) and 57% say it shows Biden’s ability to make important decisions. 62%, however, say that Harris being Biden’s running mate does not have much effect on their vote.

The poll was conducted by SSRS August 12 through August 15 with a national sample of 1,108 adults, including 987 registered voters.
