Cybersecurity 2022: Preparing for the Emerging Cyber Threats in 2022

CyberCyber security has become an extremely important part of our national security, bringing new challenges every new year. However, the COVID19 pandemic has been an absolute nightmare in terms of cyber security. It will probably be the same in the next 12 months. To be honest, it is more about handling unseen danger, to fight the unknown. But that doesn't mean that mitigations can't be put in place.

As per statistics from IBM, around 95% of security breaches are a result of human error. Even when you have a robust security system, there is not much that you can do about human error. As Murphy's Law states" to err is human, to repeat it is even more human." There is no solution for this nature of humans.

So, what is the solution? Make the cyber security cycle simple, make it accessible, and make it familiar. Cyber security is important for corporations, institutions, and individuals because it protects data for all entities of data from theft and damage. This risk can be before or after you have implemented countermeasures. The cyber-attack can be anything from a sophisticated breach to just a phishing attack on an individual level through fraudulent email.

Cybersecurity regulations

A silver lining is that governments have taken up the task of standardizing cyber security. Many countries that were safe havens for cybercriminals are now setting up regulations for cyber security for the protection of sensitive data and personal information.

Standardizing cyber security for corporations can help to scrutinize and question the current measures. Last year there was a 600% increase in cybercrimes. Legalizing standards and penalties for non-compliance will make companies take it seriously and decrease cyber threats. Such court decisions will set a precedent for the new fiscal policies where cyber security will be essentially included.

Challenging the comfort zone

For the past few years, we have been advocating those cloud systems are the safest way to share data. It is now time to question this belief. Is your cloud service secure? Sophisticated cybercriminals have been damaging and stealing data from these services. As a standard, companies should manage the following:

  • Report data breaches and data leaks
  • Hire a dedicated cyber security officer
  • Get users to consent to use their information
  • Make the data incognito to ensure the privacy

Every business should implement a proper cybersecurity strategy. Proper risk assessment should be done, and formulate a cyber-security plan accordingly. Around 80% of the employees admit to using Saas platforms without the IT department's approval.

Supply chain cyber-attacks on the rise

Attacking the software supply chain of a company is like attacking the company's core or brain. Once inside the system, the complete system is just a piece of cake for the hackers. They can cause the most disruption to the company through such attacks.

2021 saw many such attacks already. Unfortunately, 2022 will see a rise in such attacks. These groups have realized how effective such attacks are. That is why they objectify it, enabling newbie hackers to frequently make these attacks.

Why all the fuss?

Cybercrimes are not just limited to stealing personal information or money. It can literally cost lives. We have already seen critical infrastructures such as hospitals, traffic systems, schools, and even the power grid, vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Furthermore, while not deadly, stealing personal information has resulted in blackmail and identity theft. These threats have brought to the lives of common people. It's not only data and a business's bottom line that are in danger but also human lives.
