Drew Allen: Meghan and Harry, a Portrait of the Left

There Meghan Markle sat, millionaire across from billionaire, as she cheerfully told Oprah Winfrey how thankful she was to live in a 14.65 million dollar mansion in Montecito, CA, one of the most affluent cities in America. Markle expressed gratitude for her husband, Prince Harry, who relinquished his honorary titles and left his family and country behind to acquiesce to her own selfish demands to live near Hollywood. Markle oozed grace as she thanked God for the blessings He bestowed upon her — obscene wealth, a healthy baby boy, and unearned influence and status in the world. Oh, wait, none of that happened.

An interview did take place and Markel, a multi-millionaire did sit across from Oprah Winfrey, a billionaire, but grace and gratitude were about as abundant as a coherent thought on Joe Biden’s best day. No, Markel and her hubby Prince Harry instead used the occasion to whine, complain, and tell everyone how terrible their lives have been.

Truthfully I care as much about Harry and Meghan as Lebron James cares about the Uyghur genocide in China. But this interview is a masterpiece; or rather, a masterclass in leftist thinking. It should be mandatory watching in every home in America and used to teach our children about this gross and dangerous mental illness known as leftism.

Leftists like Markle and Harry reject personal responsibility and instead view themselves as perpetual victims. Markle, who achieved the wealth and fame that eluded her as a Hollywood actress through her marriage to a Prince, claims to be a victim of the very thing she desired. So onerous was the burden of being a “royal,” so unfair was her treatment in the tabloids, that she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore.” Indeed, what better way to shun the oppressive limelight than to do an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

I do not mock depression or suicidal thoughts, which tens of millions of Americans deal with on a daily basis, but Meghan Markle didn’t offer this personal admission to encourage or help those who suffer from mental illness, she only said it to attract our sympathy and attack the royal family. There is no low to which she is unwilling to go in order to promote herself and profit.

While Markle used the occasion to condemn the royal family and their apparent amorality, she had no moral qualms cashing in on the enormous financial benefits of being a “Duchess.” In fact, she and Harry, after announcing they intended to relinquish their royal duties as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, sought to exploit the very titles they claimed were so oppressive — applying for a global trademark for the royal Sussex brand to sell “magazines and greeting cards, clothing ranging from footwear to pyjamas.”

The Queen, however, shut this effort down, as if to convey the important message that you can’t get something for nothing. If the "Dutch people of Sussex" wanted financial independence, as they claimed, if they truly wanted to sever ties with the royal family and leave the family business behind, then they would have to earn a living apart from the business they condemned.

In the minds of leftists like Markle and Harry, this is evidence of their victimhood. Sure, it was their decision to leave, but it was still another’s responsibility to provide for them. It wasn’t really financial freedom and independence they sought, but rather a life free of responsibility.

Harry describes how difficult it was to have to live in Tyler Perry’s 18 million dollar mansion in Beverly Hills, while he and Meghan struggled to “figure out what we are going to do.” In a shocking blow, the former royals learned that the British taxpayer would no longer foot their costly security bill for no longer being royals. “I never thought I would have my security removed, because I was born in to this position,” Harry said. Meghan concurs, saying, “it was really hard.” Spoken like true elitists and leftists — out of touch and without an ounce of self awareness.

But Meghan isn’t wholly unappreciative of Tyler Perry’s generosity. She does admit that “it gave us breathing room to try and figure out what we are going to do.” Thankfully, she and Harry found a way to escape the oppressive walls of Perry’s Beverly Hills’ prison. They signed a rich deal believed to be worth 100 million dollars with Spotify and Netflix.

But this too is grounds to complain, yet another sign of their victimhood. While many would characterize these streaming deals as unearned cash grabs only afforded to the already privileged, Harry laments that they only did it because they had to — they needed a way to support themselves. Having to earn a living is a sign of being a victim, especially when that living is a meager 100 million dollars.

While Harry says his mother Diana “would feel very angry about how this panned out,” there is no need for tears because Harry is so proud of Meghan. “She safely delivered [their son] Archie during a period of time which was so cruel and so mean.”

Meghan assures us that their story is “greater than any fairy tale you've ever read.” It truly is and it couldn’t come at a more important time in our country’s history. Dr. Seuss has been cancelled and we are in desperate need of new children’s stories to replace them. I’ll certainly read the Markle Fairy tale to my children, along with my own book, to teach them the important lesson that leftism is a disease that breeds “jealousy, resentment, anger, hatred,” and amorality.
