Zuckerberg is dumping stock. With the "Biggest Rat" already showing his desire to "jump off the ship" Facebook users will find out if their personal profile data has been swept up in the Cambridge Analytica scandal today.
87 million users who might have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will supposedly receive a detailed message on their news feeds advising of any known breach. Facebook says the majority of the affected users (more than 70 million) are in the United States, although there are over a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.K.
This information can be used for political targeting among other things. The Facebook CEO will be testifying before Congress next week. Zuckerberg acknowledged that he made a "huge mistake" in failing to take a broad enough view of what Facebook's responsibility is in the world.
In an effort to notify the public, Facebook's 2.2 billion users will receive a notice titled "Protecting Your Information." This notice will include a link to see what apps they use and what information they have shared with those apps. If they want, they can shut off apps individually or turn off third-party access to their apps completely.
Zuckerberg said the 87 million figure was calculated by using the maximum number of friends that users could have had while Kogan's app collected data. The company doesn't have extensive records going back far he said, so it can not know the exact number of users affected.
Cambridge Analytica stated on Wednesday that it had data for only 30 million Facebook users.
