How to Detect and Remove Mobile Malware from Your Android Phone

Malware is one of the worst things that can happen to a computer. It’s also one of the worst things that can happen to a phone. If you’re at all worried about viruses on your Android phone then here’s how to check for – and remove – malware from your Android phone.

Signs an Android Phone Is Infected with a Virus or Malware

Phones are vulnerable to internal damage as much as external damage. Internal damage is generally harder to see though. Malware such as viruses drain the resources of your device. Here are some of the signs your phone could be infected;

  1. It runs slower than usual
  2. Apps take longer to load
  3. Battery drains faster
  4. Pop-up ads
  5. Unknown apps you didn’t download have been installed
  6. Unexplained data usage
  7. Increased phone bill

How to Check for Malware on Android

The easiest way to check an Android phone for malware is by using an antivirus app. There are lots of choices out there, so choose a reliable and reputable app that works on your phone. If you have an antivirus program on your computer you may be entitled to protection for your phone too.

Once you have a security app on your phone just run a scan as you would with a computer. Run a full scan to check every (digital) inch of your phone for vulnerabilities.

How to Remove Malware from an Android Phone

It’s always best to respond as quickly as possible to limit the potential damage of malware. Here’s how to remove malware from an Android phone.

  1. Turn the phone off and reboot it in safe mode. How to access Safe Mode can vary by phone, but here’s how Google says to access Safe Mode; Press the power button to turn off the phone. When the animation begins, hold down the “volume down” button. Keep it held down until the phone fully restarts and it should boot up in Safe Mode.
  2. Uninstall any suspicious apps. Find the app in Settings and then force close and uninstall it. This might not fully remove it, but it should prevent it from doing more damage. It should also prevent the malware from spreading itself across your network devices.
  3. Check for any other apps that may have been infected. Apps can sometimes become infected by malware. Be sure to delete any apps you suspect could be malware or could have been infected by it.
  4. Download and install a security app for your device

With an increased risk of cybercrime, it’s important that you protect every device you can, including your phone and tablet.
